Program Overview

The M.Sc. in Information Systems (IS) course aims to provide you with scientific rigour whilst exposing you to modern technologies and best practices in Information Technology. The course includes an array of study-units intended to provide the necessary skills to enable you to think strategically while providing the necessary practical and academic foundations to enable you to take up various roles in this dynamic and vibrant industry both locally and abroad. The course focuses on areas of expertise available within the Computer Information Systems department. The vast experience of the academic staff within the department ensures that you can be supported in a vast gamut of research areas, which is representative of the eclectic nature of today's Information Technology. These credits are logically grouped into streams, allowing you to customize your study experience even further in line with your desired specialisation or background. Program Curriculum

Year 1 In addition to the compulsory study-units for the year (70 ECTS credits, including the 60 ECTS credits of Dissertation), students are required to register for one elective study-uniti in Semester 1(5 ECTS) and 15 ECTS credits from their chosen elective stream on offer during Semester 2. An elective stream will ONLY be offered if a sufficient number of students register for it. Consequently, the availability of respective study-units will only be confirmed after the registration period. Semester 1 Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) CIS5003 Principles of Data Science 5 ECTS CIS5223 Concepts, Techniques and Practical Aspects of Scientific Research 5 ECTS Elective Units (Elective units are offered subject to availability, a minimum number of student registrations and time-table constraints) CIS5113 Large Scale Databases 5 ECTS CPS3230 Test Engineering and Testable System Design 5 ECTS Semester 2 Students must choose one of the following streams for Semester2: Information Processing Stream CIS5115 Enterprise Solutions 5 ECTS CIS5230 Data Analytics on the Cloud 5 ECTS ICT5101 Internet of Things 5 ECTS Software Engineering Stream CIS5040 Architecting Scalable Online Solutions 5 ECTS CIS5050 Human Computer Interaction 5 ECTS CIS5221 Delivering High Quality Solutions: Technology, Collaborative Processes and Teams 5 ECTS Summer Semester Compulsory Units (All students must register for this/these unit/s) CIS5200 * Dissertation 60 ECTS *Work on the dissertation is expected to start during Summer Semester of academic year 2026-27 and continue up to the end of Summer Semester of academic year 2026-27. This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must be in possession of: Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications a Bachelor degree pegged at Level 6 on the Malta Qualifications Framework and obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or Category II in ICT or an area with a strong ICT component, or in Engineering, or a Bachelor degree pegged at Level 6 on the Malta Qualifications Framework classified with Third Class Honours or Category III in the areas outlined in paragraph (a) above, provided that such applicants shall satisfy the Board of Studies that they are in possession of other qualifications, or relevant work experience, obtained following their first cycle degree. The Board of Studies may recommend to the Faculty Admissions Committee that the admission of such applicants may be made conditional on the results of an interview conducted for the purpose or any other Honours degree obtained with at least Second Class Honours, provided that applicants would have successfully completed at least three individual study-units as directed by the Board, prior to being admitted to the Course. Interviews, when necessary, shall be conducted by a board composed of at least three members. Eligible applicants may register as visiting students for individual study-units and obtain credit for them. Subject to approval by the Board, credits awarded for any such study-units may be transferred to the Course, provided that not more than seven years have elapsed from the successful completion of the study-unit. When credit for more than one study-unit is being transferred to the Course, then the seven years shall commence from the date of the last credit awarded.
